Dictatorship with Successors over the years:
- In the fourteenth century Javanese began to refer to it as Temasek and by the seventeenth century Malay noted the 1299 founding the city of Singapura ("lion city") after a sighting of a lion like beast sighting was proclaim, and from that point Singapura was controlled by the Malayans sultans.
- As early as the third century A.D.- seventh century only mariners were familiar with this island as it was known to be popular trading outpost for Malay, Thai, Arab, Indian, Chinese and Javanese traders.
- 1511 Europeans arrived and the Portuguese explorers forced the reigning sultans to flee.
- 1824 the Dutch formally recognized British control of Singapore, which allowed London to acquire full sovereignty of the island.
- 1942 Japan takes control of Singapore and renames it "Shonan" (light of the South).
- 1946 Singapore became a separate crown colony under the British governance.
- 1959: Free elections under the British Authority –Lee Kuan Yew elected president.
- 1965: Independence from Britain
- 2000-2005: Yew arranges for appointments of successors (included son in law –family affair).
- 2011: First fully contested elections in decades.
